Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA)
Saskatchewan is currently experiencing increased cases of Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA), also known as swamp fever.
As infected horses pose a significant risk to other animals, protective measures must be taken where horses co-mingle.
By making those involved in the Saskatchewan equine industry aware of the current EIA outbreak, FACS shares information to help ensure they are prepared to take appropriate measures to protect their horses during the next show and race season.
To give horse enthusiasts an idea of the ‘intensity’ of infection, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) provides an up-to-date map showing EIA-affected Rural Municipalities and the number of positive horses in each RM at

The Saskatchewan Horse Federation (SHF) website also has an EIA brochure and an EIA fact sheet that provide current information developed by the SHF and Saskatchewan Agriculture.
